After being arrested, it is important to call a criminal defense attorney. You have the right to remain silent and to speak with an attorney. It is imperative that you invoke your rights and do so right away. The police may try to entrap you or to coerce a confession. Once you have asked for an attorney they are not allowed to ask you questions until your attorney arrives. This is the best form of protection as what you say during an interview, the car ride to the police station, in holding, and in jail can all be used against you in a court of law. Do not trust anyone, as you never know if what you say will come back to bite you at trial. Even a simple joke can be perceived as a confession.
